Pattern Recognition in Physics Gets a Shrink

Some of the bunnies may remember (and it was only two years ago, which shows something or other) Pattern Recognition in Physics, and attempt of the dowsers to get their own journal, the first and only issue of which folded because, well, it did not meet standards.
Pattern Recognition in Physics in March 2013. The journal idea was brought to Copernicus' attention and was taken rather critically in the beginning, since the designated Editors-in-Chief were mentioned in the context of the debates of climate skeptics. However, the initiators asserted that the aim of the journal was to publish articles about patterns recognized in the full spectrum of physical disciplines rather than to focus on climate-research-related topics.
In addition, the editors selected the referees on a nepotistic basis, which we regard as malpractice in scientific publishing and not in accordance with our publication ethics we expect to be followed by the editors.
Therefore, we at Copernicus Publications wish to distance ourselves from the apparent misuse of the originally agreed aims & scope of the journal as well as the malpractice regarding the review process, and decided on 17 January 2014 to cease the publication of PRP. Of course, scientific dispute is controversial and should allow contradictory opinions which can then be discussed within the scientific community. However, the recent developments including the expressed implications (see above) have led us to this drastic decision.
Of course, PRP had an all start cast, Nils Axel Mรถrner, Nicola Scaffetta, Tallbloke and more, and they were not about ready to take this lying down, they were going to continue publishing on their own.  That lasted about a week, although the web site still exists.

So today, creeping into Eli's Twitter feed comes Hetrodox Academy, a web site dedicated to giving the whiners a voice in social psychology, because, you know, everyone gets to waste other people's time.  Well, Jose Duarte is there and Judith Curry is there and Steven Pinker is there, but what this is, is a cry for attention, another damn National Academy of Scholars.

This is the full Donald Trump comb over.  Adam Gopnik, writing in the New Yorker today sums it up so well, that all Eli has to do is make minor changes to express the attitude of the Hetrodox Academy at appropriate places
The outsiders are swamping us, and the insiders are mocking us—this ideology alters its local color as circumstances change, but the essential core is always there.  They look down on us and they have no right to look down on us.
Indeed, the politics of Jose Duarte, far from being in any way new, are  exactly the politics of Huck Finn’s drunken father in “Huckleberry Finn”: “Call this a science! Just look at it and see what it’s like . . . . A man can’t get his rights in a field like this.” Widespread dissatisfaction with all in the profession, a certainty of having been “sold out,” a feeling of complete alienation

Woo woo scientists should always have a place to air their opinions.

It makes for better phyzzzyks.

I had a quick look at the first few paragraphs and Figure 1 of their Cole's Notes version of their paper.

They lost me immediately when they started talking about Democrats and Republicans. Obviously too provincial a diatribe to pay attention to. I know dozens of psychologists and I don't believe any of them are Democrats or Republicans.

It's a pity as most psychologists are likely to be anything from slightly left-wing to raving communist like my old prof who held a memorial service for Envar Hoxha and some sensible discussion of this might be interesting.

Sounds like another journal like the Journal of Scientific Exploration, busily exploring homeopathy and similar fields.

Adam Gopnik takes down Donald Trump.

Eli Rabett steals Gopnik's words and ideas and tries to attack a new initiative exploring diversity in research.

Difference: Gopnik has talent and ideas. Rabett has nothing but a burning, carrot-stained hatred of all who disagree with his monomaniacal focus on an outlying view of climate science. Even the IPCC shudders in disgust.

Tom applauds, 'Views on shape of the earth differ.' That's 'diversity' in research for ya. Cuz until now every scientist has been researching by the secret playbook, dontcha know?

Oh look, "Perhaps he can join Al Gore in the Hall of Shame for climate opportunists, under the category of sex offender." The libel still stands uncorrected even after it being pointed out umpteen million times. What more do you need to know about a cretin like our Tom? If it wasn't for lack of morals he'd have no morals at all.

Remember, Tom is Fullerthanadunnywagon.

Of course, the idea that if two claims are mutually incompatible, one of them MUST be wrong, and that the only method of telling them apart is by the balance of evidence is rather destructive to his ego, since he doesn't ever want to be wrong.

"Lets hear the other side". But not if it's that paedophiles should be allowed to roam free as long as no physical coercion is done. Ask Gary Glitter.

Neither should it be said that deniers are a bunch of criminally insane bastards out for the quick buck because this risk is never going to be felt by them directly before they die. Hell, many of them WANT this to happen because they believe the BS in their holy book about the end of the world being "any time now" (and being correct this time, unlike the thousands of others).

If you REALLY BELIEVE that the world will end in the next 30 years, why worry what will happen in 50?

For too long now, astronomy has been blinkered by what I call the BAH principle--Blind Acceptance of Heliocentrism! They ignore all the clinching evidence against this "consensus" view. Even the scientists will tell you the Sun is nothing but a ball of hot gas, yet this ghostly body is supposed to be the center, pulling the solid Earth around it? I don't think so! Let's listen to ALL the viewpoints on this subject, instead of suppressing dissenting views! Geocentrist scientists are martyrs to the cause of free scientific inquiry, unhampered by establishment ideas of "evidence" or "logic" or "sanity." Alternative scientists of the world, unite! You have nothing to lose but your brains!

I'm not quite sure what the PRP part has to do with the "Anti-Homodox" Society part.

I do see JC at CE promotion of some sort of bowel movement that got it's start in the early 80's though, the time when we had the Alzheimer POTUS.

Collegiate Network
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Collegiate_Network

The Dartmouth Review
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Collegiate_Network

The Cornell Review
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Cornell_Review

Political correctness
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Political_correctness

So after 35 years of this nonsense of promoting regressive thought, JC figures it's finally time "hoping that we are on the verge of a change."

That publication resume also looks extremely thin. That's what sort of happens when you send the 5th (nonexistent) string into an ice hockey game.

Of course, I also think (and have for a very long time) that the soft sciences are all a POS to begin with in the 1st place.

Over half of psychology studies fail reproducibility test

Your apt analogy at the end though, is just that, an apt analogy.

They do seem or appear to be rather well represented by the conservative arts and sciences colleges and universities though (11-6 split not counting ONE non-American institution).

Some very old white male named Jack Hoff (aka "85") had this to say about this elsewhere ...

"I’m almost relieved to be distracted by more of the usual nonsense emanating from such anonymous climate bullies as Eli Rabett and And Then There’s Physics.

The birth of the Heterodox Academy has Rabett in a tizzy, as he obviously fears that they will object to the Stalinist party line adhered to and enforced by Konsensus thugs.

The befuddled professor clearly doesn’t realize that junk science contaminates real science and obscures the truth.

But John Cook’s paper is garbage."

Such brilliant prose, Jack "85" Hoff has been in one movie to date, however, its writing style leaves much to be desired, probably has something to do with that "85" nick.

Barton Paul Levenson said...

I'm guessing the 85 stands "High Explosive" (HE, 8th letter, 5th letter), after the neo-Nazi "88" salute (HH, for "Heil Hitler").

Heterodox Academy is a group that "all agree that our academic fields (and many others) would produce better and more reliable research if they contained more viewpoint diversity."

That is a very post modern view. Everyone's opinion is valuable. No idea is too stupid to reject.

EliRabett said...

C'mon EF, how can Eli be a climate bully w/o a link.

"Heterodox Academy is a group that "all agree that our academic fields (and many others) would produce better and more reliable research if they contained more viewpoint diversity.""

Just wondering? What about the idea that that is a load of bunk? Is that idea accepted as just as valid and acceptable in its diversity?

Or is that a triggering claim?

Of course, producing no data or conclusion because you're mired in a billion idiots ensures you can never be wrong. I don't know that that would be counted as "more reliable", never mind "better" research.

Or is that viewpoint ALSO too toxic for them to allow in their diversity?

I'm not even sure how I can be a climate bully with a link :-)

Thanks for the JoSE link, John Farley. Without it, I'd never have known that cucumbers grown according to 'organic' principles emit less light than those that are conventionally grown and, perhaps not coincidentally, that sweeter, tastier cucumbers also emit less light.

Almost all of the magazine's 30-year archive is available for free.

Yet another wonderful way to waste time.

(Perhaps I'm being hasty in thanking you.)

Eli and ATTP,

"85" is the 'full-of-it' brush salesperson, has a new 'luckwarmer' book just out, or so I've been told.

Quote above is slightly out of context (I sort of cheery picked some of the 'juicy' parts), but what the heck.

Hey Sargent, thanks for the plug. I've got a plug for you too, but hesitate to discuss receptacles and orifices here.

Jack Hoff! That's soooo funny. But be careful--ATTP has an epileptic fit at the mention of masturbation: https://thelukewarmersway.wordpress.com/2015/07/13/zero-room-for-climate-debate-greg-laden-plays-with-himself/comment-page-1/#comment-8085

And I'm delighted to see you mention context in passing--well, with you lot in passing is all context ever gets--but I'm not surprised that you choose the worst of the Alien series to quote from.

Far more appropriate for you:

Sargent: Hey Vasquez, you ever been mistaken for a man?

Vasquez: No. Have you?

I know this is Eli's blog, but let's be careful how we respond to Tom. It's seems that he thinks it's okay for him to imply that someone's a wanker, but any response in kind is - according to Tom - bullying. To minimise the whining - and, presumably, the tears - let's treat Tom with kids' gloves. We really shouldn't be taking advantage of timid, sensitive types.

Although, if we did respond in kind, that might give Tom the opportunity to write another book where he whines about the Klimate Konsensus.

"To minimise the whining - and, presumably, the tears - let's treat Tom with kids' gloves."

There's no method to minimise the whining other than to agree to everything Tom Fullerthanadunnywagon says.

"We really shouldn't be taking advantage of timid, sensitive types."

We aren't. We're just not going to be bullied by one.

"if we did respond in kind, that might give Tom the opportunity to write another book where he whines about the Klimate Konsensus. "

If we didn't, he'd happily make stuff up to do it, so no reason to worry one way or the other.

Think of OReilley and his perennial "War on Christmas". Doesn't matter that it doesn't exist, he'll damn well MAKE it exist. Even if it requires lying his ass off.

Fullerthanadunnywagon is stuck in the "monkey-see monkey-do" scenario.
